The Original – Surfsquad Group Session

The Original Surfsquad[su_row][su_column size=”3/5″]The original practical swimming program for the complete surf/ocean environment. Designed for students 8yrs and above, sessions begin with a pool component before moving to the beach. Sessions are mobile between North Bondi and Bronte, depending on the days conditions.

Observations – Students take the time to survey the days conditions and how that will affect the local environment. Factors include swell and wind direction, tide times and the observing of the ever-changing local aquatic topography ie. Rips, sandbanks, reefs etc. Observation is a crucial aspect of using the ocean/surf environment but often overlooked – EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT.

Pool Skills – Swimmers learn and practice a combination of skills, strokes and sequences that cover all aspects of the surf environment. This is the best way to practice the skills needed in the moving water environment under controlled conditions.

Shallow Ocean – Down to the beach. Students are first taught to observe and stay within a “shallow” area, practicing skills learned in the pool.

Deeper Ocean – The next step into deeper water. At this point, swimmers learn to swim in and with the deeper areas of the surf (rips, gutters etc) and how to use it to advantage. This includes (but not limited to) returning to shore, passing the breakers, finding safety.

Each session follows the same basic outline, creating a repetitive process of “swimming” in the surf environment. However, conditions are ever-changing and so the program adapts accordingly. This way, swimmers will eventually learn to use their skills and knowledge to choose how and where they swim in particular conditions. Students learn to stay in control, putting their skills into practice at their own pace.

AM and PM sessions are available every Saturday and Sunday. Each session is 3-4 hours in duration and run all year round.

Surfsquad has a maximum ratio of 6 students to 1 instructor. Maximum group numbers are 12 students to 2/3 instructors.
What qualifications do the Instructors hold?
All instructors are Swim Australia certified, hold valid CPR and Working with Children Checks. Our lead instructors also hold Ocean Surf Safety Coaches Accreditations from APOLA (includes CPR and applied First Aid).
Do you have to be a strong swimmer?
No. The Surfsquad program turns “strong” swimming into practical swimming. Kids need to be able to swim (not a non-swimmer), as long as they can swim, we teach you how to swim in the moving water environment which has nothing to do with being a strong pool swimmer. Whats most important is that kids have an interest in the surf/ocean environment.
Does this mean “strong” swimmers wont benefit?
No. In our opinion the concept of a “strong” swimmer is misleading and can be dangerous in the surf/ocean environment. Strong pool swimmers will learn a whole new repertoire of skills through the Surfsquad program and will learn how to channel their strength efficiently in the surf environment.[/su_box]
